75th Anniversary of FDR State Park highlights May events at Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites

FDR State Park

The 75th Anniversary of FDR State Park and a commemoration of the 175th anniversary of the Trail of Tears highlight events planned for May at Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites.  Plus there are great train excursions, nature walks, history programs and events for kids!

Atlanta Audubon Society Bird Walk

Fort Yargo State Park – Winder

Fort Yargo has some great habitat, including marshland, mixed hardwood Forest, and an expansive open lake. We will look for a variety of birds like woodpeckers, warblers, and wading birds. Learn about the Atlanta Audubon Society, and how you can get involved in bird watching, as well as land conservation. $5 parking. CCC Reunion/Trail Project

Vogel State Park – Blairsville

Join the boys of "The Tree Army" as they tell stories of the New Deal era. This is a covered-dish meal with meat and drinks provided by the Vogel Volunteers. Twisted Ankle Marathon

The Twisted Ankle Marathon and Half Marathon is a hilly, technical run through the park and along Taylor's Ridge in the Chattahoochee National Forest. 175 Years: Cherokee Trail of Tears Memorial Service

New Echota Historic Site – Calhoun

In May 1838, State Militia and Federal Troops started the removal of Cherokee Indians from their homeland in Georgia and surrounding states. Join us for a memorial service including speakers from the Cherokee Nation, Eastern Band of Cherokee, United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee and National Trail of Tears Association. Youth Fishing Days at Buck Shoals

Jackie Robinson Birthplace near Cairo, Georgia

Jackie Robinson Birthplace

Jackie Robinson, the famed player who became the first African American of the modern era to play major league baseball, was born in a sharecropper's house in rural Grady County, Georgia.

The chimney of the house still stands and can be seen along with a historical marker at the birthplace site on a country road about 11.5 miles south of Cairo, Georgia, and 22 miles north of Tallahassee, Florida.

Born Jack Roosevelt Robinson in 1919, Jackie Robinson spent the first years of his life in a frame house occupied by his family. His father was a sharecropper.  This system, under which men, women and sometimes children, worked in the fields in exchange for a share of the crop had been introduced in the South during the Reconstruction era by the U.S. Government as a way to get the farms back into operation at a time when hard money was in very short supply.

The Reconstruction era government authorities eventually went away or were driven out, but the sharecropping system they imposed on poor whites and blacks in the South continued on well into the 20th century.

Robinson first learned about life watching his father work in such a system.  When his father left the family, his mother picked up her children - including the young Jackie Robinson - and moved them away in search of a better life.  He went on to play baseball, basketball, football and track at UCLA and eventually became the famed player who broke the color barrier in Major League baseball.

St. Patrick's celebrations are underway in Savannah

The official observance of the St. Patrick's Day weekend stepped off in Savannah this afternoon with the Jasper Green Ceremony at Madison Square.

Savannah is home to one of the largest St. Patrick's Day parades and celebrations in the world. Hundreds of thousands of people will make it to the city to join in the celebration, which has been observed in the city since at least 1813.  So far as is known, the first parade there was held in 1818.

The main day of events will be tomorrow (Saturday, March 16th), with the annual St. Patrick's Day Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist starting at 8 a.m. and the big parade itself stepping off at 10:15 a.m.

Fort Pulaski National Monument - Savannah, Georgia

Battle-scarred walls of Fort Pulaski

One of the best preserved and most significant of the nation's antebellum coastal fortifications can be explored at Fort Pulaski National Monument near Savannah, Georgia.

Built on Cockspur Island near the mouth of the Savannah River, Fort Pulaski was a massive five-sided masonry fort designed to protect the vital port of Savannah from foreign attack. Instead, the only guns ever turned on it were those of the United States itself.

The fort was battered into submission during a two day battle in April 1862, an engagement that forever ended the era of masonry seacoast forts. Advancements in artillery had surpassed the ability of structures like Fort Pulaski to stand up to a sustained bombardment from rifled cannon.

During the final year of the war, the fort also achieved a dubious distinction as the site of the dungeon where the Confederate prisoners of war of the Immortal Six Hundred were intentionally starved and tortured.

Gen. Beau Lee predicts Six More Weeks of Winter

Georgia's official weather predicting groundhog has defied the forecast of his Northern rival and seen his shadow. That means, according to Gen. Beau Lee, six more weeks of winter.

Gen. Lee is the official groundhog in residence at Yellow River Game Ranch on Highway 78 just east of Stone Mountain, Georgia. Independent verification indicates that, as usually is the case with Southerners, he is far more accurate than Pennsylvania's Punxutawney Phil.

The Pennsylvania "seer of seers" did not see his shadow this morning and says an early spring is on the way. But in Georgia, Gen. Lee says not to believe it.  According to his official Twitter feed, we are in for six more weeks of winter.

For those who keep count of such things, Gen. Lee has a 94% track record of accuracy. And that's something no Northern groundhog can match!  Punxutawney Phil, in fact, is right only 39% of the time.

Reynolds Mansion hosts Holiday Brunch and Tours

The historic Reynolds Mansion on Sapelo Island will be hosting special holiday brunches and tours

SAPELO ISLAND, GA, November 29, 2012 -- Visiting Georgia’s Sapelo Island is a rare treat in itself, but visiting during the holidays can be a special opportunity. This December, the island’s Reynolds Mansion is opening its doors for seasonal dining and tours. Reached only by ferry, the Reynolds Mansion is a historic home normally open only to private group retreats.

During the holidays, day visitors can explore this historic home and pristine island during two meals, either brunch or lunch. Pancake brunch is offered on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, followed by a tour of the unique home. A baked chicken lunch is offered Monday, Tuesday and Thursday – including tours of the mansion, island, beach, lighthouse and Hog Hammock community. While touring the home, visitors will see the famed “circus room,” murals by Athos Menaboni, a bowling alley with original wooden bowling pins and the original 1850s pool table.

The Reynolds Mansion has a rich history dating back more than 200 years. The original home was built by Thomas Spalding, an architect, statesman and plantation owner who purchased the south end of the island in 1802. After the Civil War, the mansion fell into ruin and was later rebuilt by Detroit automotive engineer Howard Coffin in 1912. Tobacco heir Richard Reynolds purchased the property in 1934 and allowed the University of Georgia to use its facilities for marine research. Following Reynolds' death in 1964, the mansion and most of the island were obtained by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Today, the DNR operates the Reynolds Mansion as a group rental facility, while day visitors can take guided tours. The university’s marine research facilities are still located on the island, and descendants of former slaves continue to live in Hog Hammock community.

The cost is $10 for the ferry ride, plus $15 for brunch or $30 for lunch.
